Early voting has kicked off in Tennessee, and for residents of Murfreesboro — the City Council race is particularly important. Why?
In 2019, despite tremendous opposition from the community, every single City Councilman on the ballot this year voted to raise our taxes by 35%.
The Council was presented with ways to cut spending and alternative directions, but they did not want to hear any alternatives. They were determined to continue down their path of mismanaging money, like the disaster of the new police headquarters that was 70% over budget, costing Murfreesboro residents $23 million beyond the original plan.
Despite years of record increases in tax revenues for the city (a 36% increase from 2013-2019), their spending still outpaced the extra money received, and they drove the city into a financial emergency and a multi-million dollar budget shortfall by 2019.
When you cast your vote in the Murfreesboro City Council race, there is only one name you need to remember — Shawn Wright.
Shawn is NOT a current member of the City Council, and has pledged to never raise taxes in Murfreesboro. This is a much needed change from the current big spending and tax increasing Council members on the ballot. For those Republicans voting in this race, Shawn was the only Council candidate endorsed by the Rutherford County Republican Party.
